Research- Genres to consider

Welcome to my first blog post! Today, I will be talking about the 3 different genres that I have done research on.

My teammates and I decided to do the brief for creating  a film-opening. In order to start planning for this, I researched 3 different genres. I explore romance, comedy, and horror. I researched different things about them, such as how they engage with the audience and how they use different conventions.

The romance genre mainly focuses on relationships and emotional connections. Some shots are often close-up shots, with soft lighting and soft music. They use this to create intimacy and to briefly introduce the characters. Music plays a very important role in this genre because it creates a romantic tone. Romance is mostly stereotypes because most of them have a predictable storyline, so if I choose to do this one, I will have to keep that in mind to be successful.

The comedy genre is mainly used to entertain the viewers through funny and humorous things. This genre usually uses bright lighting and fast-paced scenes for the opening. In order for comedy to have a strong opening, it must have good dialogue and good visuals. This is important because it will help the audience understand what type of comedy they are watching from the start. Comedy is also useful to spread awareness about real-world things while also being funny and keeping the audience entertained.

The horror genre aims to create fear as soon as the film starts. Horror often uses dark lighting and weird soundtracks to make the audience feel uneasy. Some techniques they use to be successful are slow camera movement and silence, followed by noise. Horror is super effective when it comes to short films because it quickly grabs the audience's attention, as it happens when the viewer least expects it. It's sometimes based on stereotypes because the viewer is expected to be scared, so if I choose to do this genre, I will make sure to be original.

Reflection:

Overall, doing my research on all these genres has helped me understand how different techniques will affect how the audience experiences my film opening. Each of these genres offers many opportunities that will help my group create an effective film opening that meets the expectations.

Thank you for listening!
