Hey everyone! This is my third blog, and today I will be deeply researching the horror genre. As my teammates and I discussed, we think we will be the most successful with this genre. In order to be successful, we must know more information about this genre, which is why I will be researching it!
Horror films are very popular around the world. It's one of the earliest and most significant storytelling genres. It;s main focus is to create the feeling of anxiety and fear in its audience. Unlike other genres, whose main purpose is to entertain and inspire, horror is meant to create emotional disturbance. Horror can represent underlying human fears like morality and vulnerability by exposing them to death, torture, and the unknown. A core convention of horror is the fear of the unknown. Horror often hides details from the viewers so that they can imagine what they can't see. They create confusion, shadows, and an unnoticed presence, which makes it more terrifying than just an act of violence. Horror also used lonely or isolated targets. Children, families, or people with unavailable help are often the main characters. The settings, such as basements, haunted houses, and creepy towns, make the feeling of helplessness more intense. Another convention is the disturbance of safe places. Places that are considered safe, such as homes, schools, or places of worship, are used as a terror spot. This implies that danger can be anywhere without even relaxing. This makes it more terrifying and makes the audience more uneasy.
Horror filmmakers use many cinematic techniques to evoke intense emotions in viewers. Sound design is the most useful one. Sounds, whispers, and sudden noise are effective in creating more tension and also create automatic fear. Color and lighting are also very important in the horror genre. While sudden changes in the lighting can show danger, low-key lighting and shadows can produce a dark environment. In order to cause discomfort in the audience, camera techniques are commonly used in this genre. For example, slow tracking shots create suspense, while close-up shots highlight terror and panic in most viewers.
One successful film in the horror genre is IT. It was released in 2017, and it was directed by Andy Muschietti. It's a supernatural film that was adapted from Stephan King's 1986 IT novel. One major reason as to why this film's success was its focus on the characters' development. This film didn't just focus on the scares, it focused a lot on the children's bullying experience and centers the film on the "Losers Club". It was a group of children who dealt with a lot of bullying and abuse. The audience can relate to these characters and feel more connected to them. Which leads to a better experience with this film. Another reason is that the film used many horror conventions and techniques. The movie uses creepy sound effects, symbolic imagery, and gloomy lighting to create suspense with jump scares. Pennywise the clown uses the kids' phobias to scare them, which allows the movie be able to explore many different horror themes.
Another successful example of the horror genre is the Fear Street Trilogy. It was directed by Leigh Janiak, inspired by R.L. Stine's book series. It was successful because it combines traditional slasher elements such as young main characters, graphic violence, and masked killers. This united all of the films from different eras. This format keeps the audience interested because it's something different in every movie.
Reflection:
Overall, the horror film is the film that my group and I chose because we believe that we can have a successful film. We all did our research on the genre, and we know what is expected!
