Research-sucessful horror publishers/studios

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog. In today's blog, I will be researching which publishers/studios are most successful in the horror genre!

For a very long time, the horror genre has been a cultural staple and an accurate box office performer. Horror has always been flexible, low risk, and high reward. This makes it very appealing to studios, compared to other cinemas that will just die down. However, not every studio is as successful. I am going to be researching the top 3 most successful studios and learn how they were so successful.

Blumhouse Productions

One of the most successful studios is Blumhouse Productions. Jason Blum founded it and quickly gained fame for profucing high content, low-budget horror films. Some important details to know about this studio are that the profit was maximized by low production costs, which were usually just under $15 million. The filmmakers are so creative that they can create original and unique voices. They are the creaters for many popular movies such as The Black Phone franchise, The Purge, Insidious, and Paranormal Activity. Overall, Blumhouse's approach has shown that horror films don't need a big budget for them to be successful. They have also encouraged other companies to do the same.
Below is a list of movies from Blumhouse Productions!

A24

A24 has positioned itself to be the home of auteur-driven horror, in contrast to Blumhouse's approach. It's not mainly a horror studio, but it has a huge influence on the artistic aspect of this genre. Some popular A24 films are Genetic, Talk To Me, Midsommar, and many more. Horror movies from A24 often combine psychological depth with eye-catching visuals, appealing beyond normal horror fans and receiving compliments from critics.

Universal Pictures

Through many successful franchises, big Hollywood companies like Universal Pictures have long controlled the mainstream horror genre. Some of the most popular franchises include IT, The nun, Anabelle, and many more. To attract a big audience, they make use of well-established intellectual property and good marketing budgets. In particular, The Conjuring that connected the horror world, may result in long-term success.

Reflection:

Overall, this research taught me that horror studios can succeed in a variety of ways, from more creative narratives like A24 to low-budget creativity like Blumhouse. I also discovered that bigger corporations, such as Universal, rely significantly on marketing and franchises to draw in sizable audiences.
