Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog. I will be talking and considering my target audience for the horror genre!
Horror is very understanding with its audience because it's adaptable and evolves with the viewers' fears. Because og this, horror has remained one of the most popular genres over time. Horror is not typically made for ONE specific audience, it's more for a variety of audiences based on different factors such as age, culture, etc. Teenagers and young adults, typically aged 15-30, are mainly the target audience for a lot of horror films. Horror usually attracts this audience because it creates strong feelings such as excitement and adrenaline. Many horror films are appreciated and enjoyed more by the younger audience in group settings because they can be watched during sleepovers, hangouts, or a class watch party.
Every sub-genre in the horror genre has a different targeted audience. For example, Slasher films are mainly targeted for young adults who enjoy violence, relatable characters, and like fast paced films. Some movie examples of this is scream or Fear Street. Supernatural films usually target viewers who enjoy religious themes, psychological tension, and slow-building fear. Psychological horror appeals to more mature viewers who enjoy storytelling and films with deeper meaning rather than just jump scares.
Here is a chart that shows the most popular ages that watch horror films! As you can see, people aged 15-24 are the most popular.
One major trend in modern horror is the shift from purely violent films to psychological fear. Anxiety, trauma, and mental health are huge themes in this genre and in recent movies. These can show what younger generations actually have to face in the real world. With all of this, horror can become less scary and overall more relatable to the audience. The growth of mindful horror is also a major trend in the horror genre. Horror films are starting to be used to provide criticism on topics such as identity, loss, and social pressure. This trend typically only appeals to the audience that wants the horror to feel more relevant and not just scary. Additionally, there has been an increase in nostalgia-driven horror, mostly found in Gen-Z. The films that are set in past decades and the ones that combine horror and comfort are becoming more popular nowadays.
Reflection:
Overall, horror is so successful because it recognizes its audience and adjusts to social trends. It remains popular among young adults by making the films not only scary but also relatable to the audience. Horror is so much more than just scares!
